Changing Places Week 134 W/C 7th September 2008

Majorca for us is the Island of music. Our family must be music crazy with all the events that we are in the midst of, or preparing for.  Trev is as nervous as he can be as he has to attend an audition for the first time in his life.  This man in his time has been a captain of industry and shouldn't be fazed by having to sing a couple of pieces from the Messiah - but he is. This is all to take part in the joint choir's production of Handels Messiah which is being performed in Palma Cathedral on December 12th.  First came the application form with a CV of performed music of the past which had to be delivered to an office in Marrataxi then the phone calls. A helpful lady from the office of the music director was co coordinating the auditions and was heard to laugh down the phone at our Spanish pronunciation. Tammy from our office to the rescue with her fine interpreting skills and sense of humour and the communication disaster was averted.   Now he is ready to go with two set pieces and his pristine copy of the music score.  Georgie Insull was not going to let one of her singers go unprepared for the audition so she gave him a master class and lots of encouragement and he is beginning to think that there might be life again after next Saturday. My husband has been talking about this for three years and at last the talk has propelled him into action. I just have to put up with the Diva in him for the next few days! `Darling I just have to rehearse - don't disturb me for a while.' Oh dear…………

Choirs are hot property in Majorca and becoming very trendy after the exposure on the Last Choir Standing programme recently seen on TV. Geogie Insull was ahead of her time and us members of her choir have never been busier. We are in the middle of a frantic wedding season and in September alone will have sung at a dozen weddings. We travel all over the Island from Arta to Andraitx. Last week we sang in the Port of Soller which was a first for us and very special for me being our local church. Then of course we are beginning the rehearsals for our Christmas concert. So while the sun is beating down on all the beautiful brides of Majorca we are thinking of Christmas bells, robins and snowflakes. Hysteria sets in as we contemplate our singing schedule and then horror of horrors the realisation dawned that the dates clash. The Messiah performance in the Cathedral and the Georgie Insull Christmas concert is on the same day. I will be singing with the ladies so won't be able to see Trev fulfilling an ambition to sing in the cathedral.
All is not lost as they do have a full dress rehearsal the day before so I will be able to go then and the rest of the family will support him on the day - panic subsides.

Kate contemplates being `a citizen of Japan' and practices her fan movements in time with the music. Centre Stage is back after the summer holidays and in full swing for the next children's production.  An adaptation of the Mikado is to delight them this term and its proving a very popular choice with the children.  The kimonos and music brings back memories to us all and Kate thinks we are very clever to know the words.  So much music and so little time to listen and sing!

This Saturday takes us to The Bullring to see the spectacular Carmina Burana. This was a piece we performed in our previous life in a North London choir. We sang in the North London Chorus which was based in Parliament Hill School and was a mixture of teachers, parents and pupils of the school. The school hall was good enough but to see it all with special effects at the Palma Bullring will be a night to remember. So we'll amble along to the Bullring after Trev's audition and after another wedding performance in Deya in the afternoon. Music and Majorca -  what a way to spend a Saturday.
