Changing Places Week 157 W/C 22nd February 2009

Virtual auditions and skype interviews take us into a world of technology that was not our experience in London.  As Majorca cranks itself up for another happy season the Entertainers and Kids Club Reps have to be trained ready to give of their best every day.
They live all over the world and have to be interviewed and checked before they arrive here ready to train.  They come to us by many means but one of the most interesting is a job board called Stagepool.  To flick through the opportunities available on that medium takes you into a different world. Acrobats, fire eaters, singers and contortionists, actors, wardrobe mistress, walk on parts for ugly people and many more.  All these talents and more ready to entertain the good holidaymakers of Majorca.  The training courses begin this weekend so watch out Palma Nova you are about to be invaded by entertainers en masse - prepare to be amused.

The Port of Soller is coming to life as restaurants and shops reopen after their winter holidays.  The visitors sit once again under our office window having lunch and chattering while we beaver away.  The gentle murmurs of discontent are around with the annual price increases being displayed for all to see.  The complaints are coming from families here for half term - the snack menus selling rolls for between €3.50 and €4.50 means that a small lunch for a family could cost over €20.  Translate that into pounds and our visitors are not happy.   Using the tram at a cost of €4 per head means this delightful trip is dearer than taking a taxi from town to port for a family.  This year our visitors are questioning the price and finding it all too much. Let's hope when the murmurs become louder that our lovely Island has not done irreparable damage.

Jay is home alone this week - well not quite, she still has the littlest one with her. Matthew and Kate have gone to Cornwall to visit his parents and see their new house by the sea.  Great excitement as they headed back to the UK for a bit of retail therapy and Cornish fish and chips.  Kate was looking forward to being indulged by the other set of grandparents and having their undivided attention.  So much to tell them of her exciting life here and her action packed days - she might give the odd thought to her little sister back here still going to school every day, no half term holidays for the state schools in Majorca!  Jay is looking forward to having the remote control all to herself and watching `romcom' films with no-one flicking over to see the football scores.  (For the uninitiated romcom stands for romantic comedy!)

Anyone who was anyone was at the Renoir cinema this week watching Slumdog Millionaire. It was like an English community centre - we all knew one another!   The cinema is such a delight and the man sitting in the booth selling tickets is a throwback to another age.  We can add nothing to the reviews and the accolades of the Oscars and feel privileged that on this Spanish Island we can see the very latest films in English - spoilt or what! The huge square in front of the s'Escorxador complex was hosting a party as we left the cinema.  This was a Mexican form of line dancing which had me itching to join in.  The girls in the bright costumes and hats danced to one side of the square and the men in the similar costumes but with bells attached to their legs on the other.  A live band was pumping out the music for the dance and the square was a riot of colour and dance.  The men's bells were reminiscent of Morris dancing bells but the whole effect would have been out of place on an English village green.  This was Latin with a capitol L and was just hotting up as we left for home.  The whole area was the hot ticket of Friday night from cinema to music and dance...
Dancing outside under a beautiful starry sky at the end of the working week - a sure sign that spring is round the corner.
