Changing Places Week 155 W/C 8th February 2009

The wonders of the internet and Facebook means that we can pick up on the detail of our friends and families lives wherever they are in the world.  Sometimes living on our 50 mile rock, that is Majorca, we become very insular and need the reminder of the big wide world out there.  The facebook pictures have been of snowmen, children's delight at days off school and winter picnics.  North London in the snow has been captured and sent to us many times by friends anxious for us to know what we are missing.  We look up to our mountains here in Soller and can just about see a speckle of the white stuff on the highest ridge - but no snowmen here. Facebook, My Space, emails all take the place of picking up the phone but they do give instant irrelevant comment and gossip an opportunity to flourish.

Since our satellite dish was blown down in the last big storm we have been without TV.  We can manage; it will be nice to listen to music, read or talk we thought.  We moved on from that one and borrowed DVD's from friends who were concerned that we were going stir crazy.  Our son-in-law went to a local friend to borrow DVD's he thought we would like and came back bearing a great pile.  Why Matthew thought we would like the latest Superman movie I just don't know and that was his best choice.  By the time you read this we should be connected again with Sean at Ocean riding to our rescue with new dish and wiring ready to put us back in touch with our wider world.  What has been happening in Eastenders and Coronation Street this past two weeks? - I've got such a lot of catching up to do.

My Spanish experience of the courts took a new turn this week when I was called by a `well wisher' and told that my name was being mentioned in a court case on the Peninsular.  Sometimes life takes on surreal dimensions - what could I possibly have done to earn that accolade? The truth is very odd and it concerns someone else's legal battle with their ex- employer. It was said by this person (who I don't know, have never met or am likely to) that he was told by his bosses to lift the Agony Aunt Column, written by me for the Daily Bulletin and print it in its entirety in their newspaper and claim it as their own. Maybe mainland problems aren't as interesting as the ones we have in Majorca!   Plagiarism is the word being used or stealing copy is another. This employee had moral objections to this and it forms part of his court case. In the Agony Aunt world this is also seen as `imitation being the sincerest form of flattery' although I do recognise its more serious side. They could at least have paid me!  Syndicated agony - now there's a thought.

`Mum if you're going to Nice Price buy some Piccalilli' took on a poignant meaning this week. This is the food of the gods that Jay craves when she is pregnant.  After last year's miscarriage and all the sadness it was my great pleasure to go on the piccalilli hunt.  Early days yet of course, this pregnancy will take a while to relax into, but so far so good and Kate and Emma are again discussing the merits of a brother or sister. No cycling for Jay, ease up on the yoga and eat lots of piccalilli is the rule for the next few weeks and that together with masses of sleep will be utopia.
